When a Trendline Deserves a Second Touch

Hand sketching lines on printed chart paper

Traders often treat the second touch as proof. In practice, the second touch is a hypothesis: the market returned to a slope you proposed, nothing more. Before promoting that line to a decision tool, ask whether the touch used the same type of extreme (wick versus close) and whether intervening bars respected the slope without constant mid-bar violations.

A useful habit in our Shinjuku studios is to keep a provisional line and a confirmed line on separate layers. Provisional lines guide attention; confirmed lines justify size. If the third touch arrives with a clean rejection and volume that matches prior reactions, promotion is earned. If the third touch is a slow grind through the line, demotion is the disciplined move.

None of this requires exotic indicators. It requires patience with incomplete information and a willingness to redraw when the structure changes. Trendline work rewards the analyst who updates the map more than the one who defends yesterday’s sketch.
